Climate Change in the Bering Sea

Produced by Chris Linder and Lonny Lippsett for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Bering Sea support an incredibly productive ecosystem. As temperatures rise, how will the reduction in ice extent affect this delicately balanced ecosystem? I documented this expedition aboard the icebreaking ship Healy in April-May 2009 and collected the still photographs, video, and ambient sound for this feature. Interviews were conducted by Lonny Lippsett and Helen Fields and recorded by Tim Silva and Matt Barton at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The Polaris Project: Science in Siberia

Overview piece produced at Mediastorm by Bob Sacha, Chris Linder, and Maisie Crow; student vignettes produced by Chris Linder

During the Polaris Project field course, students and faculty work together to study the Arctic as a system. I joined the July 2009 expedition to Cherskiy, Siberia and collected the still photographs, audio interviews, video, and ambient sound for a 10-minute overview feature and five 5-minute student project vignettes.

  • Overview: why study climate change in Siberia?
  • Permafrost: frozen soil and a source of carbon
  • Lakes: thermokarst and floodplain lakes
  • Streams: linking the boreal forest to lakes and rivers
  • Bugs: collecting benthic macroinvertebrates
  • Rivers: studying Siberia's large rivers
